International Climate Protection Projects

By earmarking your contribution for international projects, you support climate protection projects in developing and newly industrialised countries.

Under the Kyoto Protocol, an official and internationally recognised standard, known as "Clean Development Mechanism" (CDM), has been created for such projects. To qualify for this standard, climate protection projects have to undergo a multi-stage process of scrutiny by independent testing institutes accredited with the United Nations. The final decision on the recognition of a climate protection project as a CDM project lies with a body set up for this purpose under the Framework Convention on Climate Change that is based in Bonn.

Climate Austria puts together a special portfolio of international CDM projects. Within this portfolio, priority is given to projects contributing to sustainable development in the host country. Positive contributions made by climate protection projects in developing and newly industrialised countries consist, above all, in the transfer of environmentally friendly technology, the creation of jobs for the local population and the reduction of environmental pollution.
